Wood and related families, click on the tree icon: |
Important: This program functions by use of JAVA. If your browser or firewall is set to block such active scripting you will probably be warned by a pop-up window or bar which will provide the option (which you can safely take) to then allow active scripting both on this page and by the following Dynamic Tree.
When active JAVA code is accepted by your browser a small square gray icon will appear at the right end of the above box. Wait until that gray icon changes into a green tree, or if you are using Google’s Chrome browser it will become a white square (see following regarding use of Chrome). Please be patient while this large database loads.
Unfortunately Java plugins and the web pages that depend on them will no longer work in the Chrome browser as Google have removed NPAPI plugin support from Chrome as of version 45 (Aug 2015)! So to use WoodLooker’s Dynamic Family Tree (that functions using Java script) you need instead to now either use (thank you Mozilla) the Firefox browser, or continue to use Chrome with a Chrome extension (‘ietab’) installed – go to
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/ie-tab/hehijbfgiekmjfkfjpbkbammjbdenadd
see also
http://blog.ietab.net/index.php/2015/08/31/use-java-silverlight-in-chrome/
It is safe to allow use of ietab’s plugin helper.exe file to take over the function of the previous NPAPI plugins on your Windows pc or laptop. Windows is required, Java does not work in this way within Android or ipad tablets.
When you have installed the ietab extension in Chrome, right click on the ietab icon in the menu bar, select ‘Options’ and in the ‘Auto URLs’ box add the URL of this page: http://www.woodlooker.midley.co.uk/dft/wood_dft.htm
Also note that even since late 2013 the updated versions of the JAVA program installed on computers have caused some problems for JAVA script on websites. When trying to activate the button on the Dynamic Family Tree either the button simply remains inactive or a message appears “Blocked by Security Settings” but without specifying for what particular security program. It is in fact the security setting of the Java program update installed on the visitor’s computer, not that of the web site. Nothing can be none about this on the website, the visitor to the site has to make an exception in their own ‘Java Control Panel’ to allow Java script to be used when they visit the woodlooker.midley site (or any other site).
Your browser will have settings (look for example under ‘Add-ons’, or indeed ‘Java’) to allow Java on particular websites, If you are using Windows (note that JAVA does not work with Android) also go to your computer’s Settings>Control Panel> to Java> (or on some versions of Windows go to Programs>Java>Configure Java), select the ‘Security’ tab where you will see a section on ‘Exception Site List’, click on Edit Site List and put in the URL of the WoodLooker DFT page –
http://www.woodlooker.midley.co.uk/dft/wood_dft.htm
and click OK
It is certainly a nuisance to have to go through the hoops of Java settings and the problems caused by Google’s removal of the necessary plugins from Chrome (maybe in their enthusiasm for HTML5 they have gone mad in ignoring legacy compatibility), but the Dynamic Family Tree display and in-depth data is very well worth the initial trouble of overcoming Java ‘security’.
This program will display a dynamic family tree, with extra notes on some individuals. Move around the family tree by clicking on chosen individuals and the tree will change to display that person’s direct ancestors and descendants. Keep clicking and you will be amazed at the far branches of the various families that can be reached: explore, for example, the Butchers or Crowhurst families of east Sussex. There is a total of 1566 persons.
Notice especially the yellow (index) button in the toolbar at the top of the screen above the dynamic tree. This will pull down an hypertext name index of the persons who appear on the tree. Use the index to get back to a part of the tree you recognise!
To print any of the ancestral dynamic family trees displayed on the following pages, press the PRINT SCRN key on your keyboard. This will copy the screen image onto your clip board. Activate your preferred graphics program and paste the clipboard contents as a new image. Print after first setting-up the printer to landscape orientation.
