Census of 3 April 1881, RG11/1016

lists a Russell family at “Beer House” who have several lodgers including William Wood, age 56 [? uncertain reading], Ag. Lab, born Kent, Midley.  [presumably this William is son of John and Elizabeth christened in May 1823 thus being age 58 in 1881]

Schedule 11 of Old Romney is a household of a Finn family
with Ellen Wood, age 20, general servant, born in Lydd
[possibly this entry is Thomas and Elizabeth Wood’s daughter Ellen Elizabeth Wood (usually known as Elizabeth), born July 1861]

Census of 1881, Midley and Old Romney, Romney Marsh,  RG11/1016, ff. 55-64
Note that at the time of the Census of 1881 no Wood family were living at Midley. Otherwise the families there were Pilcher, Reeves, Sharpe, Grist, Bourne and Marshall

Census of 1881, RG11/1016, ff. 88-97, Snargate and Snave, Romney Marsh
In the Census of 1881 in the Snargate and Snave areas of the Romney Marsh to the north of Brenzett going towards Hamstreet and Warehorne, four families and one individual by the name of Wood are listed (ff. 92, 94, 94, 97, 97v, i.e. Book 8 schedules 1, 20, 23, 13, 22). However, until there is definite proof that any of them (apart from sharing the same name) are related to the line descended from the Woods of Warehorne, no details of those Census listings are provided here.

Census of 5 April 1891, RG12/755

Charles Wood, Head, Married, age 59. Looker, born Kent, Lydd
[Probably this is Charles previously of Scotney House (see 1881), but no one else is listed in this schedule No. 71, and a closer search of the 1891 census is needed to find his wife and children. Note that a local newspaper, the Kentish Express, reported that on Christmas day 1885 Charles had a vigorous argument with his son Walter, stabbing him in the back with a pitchfork]

Census of 1891, Park Street, Lydd (Book 2 (west part of Lydd), page 29, schedule (household) No. 91, RG12/755, f. 29)

[note that the first born son Henry Wood Brignall born 1883 (age 7 in 1891) is not listed in the household].
[Note also that in the census ten years before on 3 April 2025 Joseph happened to have not been at Lydd, but on the fishing vessel ‘Godila’ at St Andrew, Plymouth, Devon (PRO Reference RG11/2202, f200). Joseph in 1881 was listed by the Census enumerator as unmarried and “21” although he had a few weeks before reached his 22nd birthday. A total of 7 fishermen are listed on the boat, four of whom (including Joseph) are recorded as having been born in Lydd.”]

This census under the 100 year rule was released by the PRO for public use on 2 January 2002. It is the first census fully available on-line on the Internet, costing £0.50 per entry per person. The launch of the 1901 Census site in January 2002 was a disaster as the huge number of attempts to access on the first two days crashed the site and it only came truly online in September 2002 at www.census.pro.gov.uk.
